Dental Sealants

It’s important to us at Value Dental Centers Mesa that your child’s smile lasts a lifetime. One of the many preventive treatments we offer at our Mesa, AZ, dental practice is dental sealants. Although adults can qualify for this treatment, we typically advise sealants for children under 12 years of age, due to their higher risk and susceptibility to tooth decay. Administering dental sealants involves brushing a tooth-colored or clear liquid plastic over back teeth. The plastic hardens to create a barrier against food and bacteria. We absolutely love treating children, so the moment they come in, we make sure they feel comfortable and well cared for, while having fun. We offer free dental sealants for children 11 years old and under.

Are You a Candidate for Dental Sealants?

In some cases adults can have sealants placed, especially if they have deep groves and fissures in their molars. However, adults may have bacteria on teeth that have already created demineralization or mild decay, and applying sealant to these teeth would me more damagaing than helpful. Because adults have the dexterity to brush and floss molars well, sealants are most often reserved for kids.

Children tend to be much more susceptible than adults to dental decay. Why? Because their little molars are tender, and proper, thorough dental hygiene isn’t always practiced. In addition to placing sealants, we will help you educate your children on proper oral hygiene, so they can take measures to preserve their natural teeth throuhgout a lifetime. If we can train them to brush and floss properaly while they’re young, they will be more likely to practice good oral hygiene throughout their teens and adulthood.

What to Expect With Dental Sealants

When you bring your little one in, the hygienist will clean your child’s teeth. Afterward, a solution will be placed on the teeth to ensure that the dental sealants will form a strong bond. Rest assured, this solution will not irritate or weaken your child’s teeth or gums in any way. Once the solution has been applied, and the teeth washed and dried, we will  brush on the white or clear liquid sealants. A special light hardens the coating, creating a durable barrier over the tops of your child’s molars. Over the next few years, the sealants will naturally and safely wear away.

Benefit of Dental Sealants

The greatest benefits of dental sealants is the reduced risk of tooth decay. This preventive treatment could potentially help you or your child avoid the build up of plaque, tartar, and bacteria that would eventually lead to enamel erosion and greater dental issues, like gum disease. In addition, fewer childhood cavities mean fewer trips to the dentist for fillings and crowns – so parents save time and money, in the long run.

If you choose sealants for you and your family, it is important to know that practicing good dental hygiene at home is crucial. Since sealants only cover the tops of the molars, it is still necessary to help your child brush and floss their teeth at least twice a day so the backs and sides of their molars are protected from food and bacteria. Your loved ones need to attend checkups and dental cleanings twice a year, as well.
